The Anchor was founded in 2015 by Katie Cawthorne, Laura Lethlean and Jessica Arthur.
The three women met at NIDA, where they trained in directing, writing and theatre production. Since then, The Anchor has produced work in Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne, collaborating with performers on subjects including gender expectations, intimacy, coming of age, motherhood, legacy and climate change. The Anchor places an emphasis on visual theatre, using physical performance techniques and lyrical language to create rigorously crafted theatre.
Katie and Laura are now at the heart of The Anchor and have built their practise around a devising process that uses real stories and experiences to explore subjects that are frequently judged, but rarely discussed. The Anchor is interested in the emotional truth contained within the content they explore. Using real world issues and personal stories their work seeks to directly engage audiences with authentic human experiences.
